Question: We're getting ready for the big day and we need to shut of utilities. Where do we start?

Jul 14 2014 - by Becky m

Answer: Shutting off utilities is a big part of moving and not usually a fun part of it. Start a month or two beforehand by collecting your statements (or looking them up online) to capture your account numbers and phone numbers. Then about two weeks before your move start making the calls to turn everything off and switch to the new utilities. Next, it's about comparing movers. You want to try to meet in person with at least 3 different movers. I know, that's a lot, but it's worth it to know your things will be in good hands. Check the US Dept of Transportation number and look up if they've had formal complaints filed. Also ask about who you should call to file a claim in case that happens. If they get twitchy about that question that could be a red flag. Here's an article: Comparing Moving Companies

Red Flags to Watch for When Picking a Long Distance Mover

It is a bad sign if your mover does not offer an in-person inspection. You should ideally meet with three different movers to ensure you make the right decision. Look for the mover’s Department of Transportation number both on the truck and in the paperwork that you sign before moving day.

Tips-01

Getting a Moving Quote

You moving quote will be based on the weight of your items, the hours needed for the move, and the distance. If you get a binding quote, look to secure a binding not-to-exceed moving estimate.
